Biography

Warren began his musical studies in Halifax, Nova Scotia at the age of seven. His six years of private guitar instruction gave him solid foundation upon which to develop musicality and technique. An early interest in rock music led to Warren signing up for a group guitar course. This taught him about playing and working with other musicians. Warren has been playing in musical groups since the age of eleven, and has spent much time touring and playing for audiences all over North America. He spent ten years as writer and performer in the Halifax based experimental fusion-rock ensemble AVACOST.

Practicing for as many as eleven hours a day, Warren was constantly seeking out and working through different method books and practice materials. Warren started practicing on other instruments and learned to play bass, keyboards, mandolin and drums.

At the age of sixteen, Warren's interest music became even more serious. He attended the Royal Conservatory of Music to pursue the study of theory, achieving a consistent ranking of First Class Honors all his RCM Examinations. Warren also won class prize three years in a row for top marks in rudiments and history .

In 1990, Warren's string quartet composition "Surface Tension" took first place in the Nova Scotia Registered Music Teachers composition contest and moved on to take second prize on a national level.

Warren's interest in the sounds of the more contemporary composers led him to pursue the study of a variety of music topics, including 20th century harmonic devices and atonality. In early 1990, He attended master classes with the influential contemporary composer Pierre Boulez through the Scotia Festival of Music.

In the early part of 1998 and again in 2002, Warren took part in a composer/arranger workshop with Symphony Nova Scotia and conductors/composers Scott MacMillan and Howard Cable. These clinics allowed Warren the opportunity to learn from the masters and to hone his orchestral writing skills.

Warren continues to study and practice many different styles of music in the pursuit of being able to not just perform the various genres, but to also integrate elements of them into his compositions.

Warren has worked as session musician and/or arranger on several studio projects in various genres of music ranging from Hip-Hop to Traditional Celtic. He also teaches music at The Fall River School of Performing Arts in Windsor Junction, Nova Scotia.

Warren is a member of the American Federation of Musicians (AFM, Local 571), The Guild of Canadian Film Composers (GCFC) and SOCAN.
